Plastic Free July
Plastic Free July is an international movement dedicated to helping people replace their plastic waste and strive for a solution to plastic pollution. It’s not just for individuals either, it's also for workplaces, schools and communities.
Plastic waste is harmful to everyone. Plastic threatens humans because of the exposure to microplastics, ingested by fish, then transmitted to humans. For the animals it can cause digestive issues and death. For humans it can lead to higher risks of cancer and higher risks of developmental issues in children. Learn more here.
The idea of Plastic Free July is to sign a pledge to reduce plastic waste in your life for just one month, the month of July. But, these solutions are so easy. The hope is you can make them permanent changes, for every month of your life.
This movement is gaining momentum with success stories from across the world from Jakarta to Campbelltown. The pledge has 170 million signatories and you could be the next! Once you've signed the pledge it's time to implement that change in your life.
They’re not asking you to upend your whole life, just to pick one plastic item in your life that you can change. Some examples include
Put reusable bags in your car for grocery runs
Bring your own coffee cup for your morning power-up
Use a reusable waterbottle
Carry a metal straw instead of getting a new plastic one
Refuse single use items
Avoid plastic packaging
Bring reusable carryout containers
Glass, stainless steel or ceramic tupperware instead of plastic
Wood or bamboo cutting boards instead of plastic
Dish scrubbers instead of sponges
Avoid disposable coffee pods
So, go ahead and sign the pledge here.
