Compost Curious? Let's Get Scrappy!
Are you scrappy? Maybe it is time to start separating your food scraps and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by taking advantage of Glen Ellyn's curb side compost service (for Groot customers). If you have considered it but haven't yet signed up, this is a perfect time: Weekly pickups have begun again (plus it is a great way to take care of yard waste too - no more bags!)
Is composting worth the mess and bother? We say yes!
LEARN
Disposing of food waste via composting may seem insignificant but if we work together to take our scraps out of the landfill, it can make a big difference. Composting keeps methane out of the atmosphere, reduces landfill waste, and gives us amazing, nutrient-rich soil.
Win-win-win.
Awareness is moving to action! The Environmental Protection Agency, at last look, wants to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030 with ambitious goals that also connect to reducing food insecurity. Local groups like the Glen House Food Panty send volunteers to grocery stores and restaurants to pick up perfectly good products that may have restrictions on sales. That food goes to needy families and stays out of the landfill. We have even seen local organizations (Yay, First Congregational and D41!) exploring composting in their facilities. My daughter spotted a concerted composting effort (get it?) last summer at Lollapalooza! There is hope!
We compost in my house and last Mother's Day I received a custom painted "Mom-post" compost countertop bucket. Best (and most useful) mother's day present ever!
